Biological and Ecological Mechanisms Supporting Marine Self-Governance: the Seri Callo de Hacha Fishery in Mexico Ecology and Society

My goal was to describe how biological and ecological factors give shape to fishing practices that can contribute to the successful self-governance of a small-scale fishing system in the Gulf of California, Mexico. The analysis was based on a comparison of the main ecological and biological indicators that fishers claim to use to govern their day-to-day decision making about fishing and data collected in situ. I found that certain indicators allow fishers to learn about differences and characteristics of the resource system and its units. Fishers use such information to guide their day-to-day fishing decisions. Chlorophyll profiles and the water column structure in the Gulf of California ArchiMer

Remote sensors provide information on the photosynthetic pigment concentration for the upper 22% of the euphotic zone. To model primary production in the water column from satellite-derived photosynthetic pigments, estimates of the vertical distribution of pigment concentration are required. A Gaussian distribution function is used to represent the pigment vertical profile with four parameters. We used 268 chlorophyll concentration profiles from 1973 through 1993, to estimate these parameters. Coastal upwelling in the eastern Gulf of California ArchiMer

Understanding and quantifying upwelling is of great importance for marine resource management. Direct measurement of this process is extremely difficult and observed time-series do not exist. However, proxies are commonly derived from different data; most commonly wind-derived. A local wind-derived coastal upwelling index (CUI) is reported for the period 1970-1996 and is considered representative for the eastern central Gulf of California, an important fishing area where no proxies exist. The index is well related to pigment concentration distribution, surface water temperature, and population dynamics of important fish resources over the seasonal time-scale. Four seasons abundance changes of Zalophus californianus californianus (Lesson 1828), Allen, 1880, in the Gulf of California, Mexico BABT

This paper describes for the first time the relative abundance, population structure and numeric variation of California sea lions in the Gulf of California, Mexico, during four different seasons. The relative abundance estimates varied from the highest 17,162 sea lions in July of 1990 (summer) to a minimum 7,470 in February of 1992 (winter), representing a reduction of 10,000 sea lions. Hypotheses about the migration of part of the population to the Pacific Ocean were compared and discussed against their residency inside the Gulf, and seasonal dispersion of individuals along this inner sea.

Insights into nitrogen cycling in the western Gulf of California from the nitrogen isotopic composition of diatom-bound organic matter ArchiMer

The nitrogen isotopic composition of organic matter contained within diatom frustules of different sediment size fractions from the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California, suggests that multiple nutrient cycling processes can be examined from a single sediment sample. The diatom-bound delta(15)N values from the greater and less than 63 mu m size fractions were analyzed from six intervals of core MD02-2517, each representing similar to 30-40 years. The diatom-bound delta(15)N values are compared to bulk sedimentary delta(15)N values, weight percent biogenic opal, and weight percent organic carbon. Revision of Hydroides Gunnerus, 1768 (Polychaeta: Serpulidae) from the Eastern Pacific region and Hawaii Naturalis

A taxonomic revision of the Hydroides species (Polychaeta: Serpulidae) from the Eastern Pacific Ocean is presented. Twentyone taxa are described, of which two are widespread (H. diramphus Mörch, 1863 and H. elegans (Haswell, 1883)) and four are Amphiamerican (H. alatalateralis (Jones, 1962), H. gairacensis Augener, 1934, H. salazarvallejoi Bastida-Zavala & Ten Hove, 2003, and H. sanctaecrucis Kroyer [in] Mörch, 1863). Science, society, and flagship species: social and political history as keys to conservation outcomes in the Gulf of California Ecology and Society

Socio-political issues are important in environmental policy outcomes but are often overlooked in conservation planning. We analyze the effects of historical social, political, and ecological contexts on conservation policy outcomes as applied to the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve. A rushed implementation, perhaps necessary for the protection of endangered totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) and vaquita (Phocoena sinus), occurred with little community consultation, resulting in enduring disgruntlement among stakeholders that undermined its effectiveness. Overfishing and habitat degradation continue both inside and outside the reserve, and totoaba and vaquita remain Critically Endangered, with the latter&#8217;s population...
